Travelling solo is an amazing way to take some time for yourself and see the world from a different perspective.

The rise of solo travel in the luxury sector means that there are now very few obstacles standing between you and your dream itinerary.

Read our tips on luxury solo travel to help prepare you for your journey.

1) Do your research

Solo travel offers complete freedom, something you’ll immediately notice in the planning stages of your trip. With no one else to consider, you are free to go where you like and do whatever you want: if you feel like spending the whole day relaxing by the pool, you can; if you want to get up at the crack of dawn for a day packed full of activities, you can. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you research your options well and speak to people who have been.

2) Embrace solitude and relaxation

There is something remarkably relaxing about travelling alone. Although it may sound clichéd, it is a perfect time to enjoy being without distractions and to have some time to yourself: moments that are quite rare in our busy lives.  For these reasons, solo travel can be immensely refreshing, particularly for those in stressful jobs. Even if you’re planning on spending some of your trip meeting people, you should also take the chance to slow down and reconnect with yourself over a quiet meal or some long walks. Embrace the chance to be alone – you will probably really enjoy it!

3) Explore your options

Do you enjoy meandering around the streets of a new city? Reconnecting with the expanses of nature? Or are you looking to meet other travellers while on your solo adventure? Thinking ahead of time about exactly what you’re hoping to get out of your solo trip makes a big difference. If you want to meet other travellers, a safari is a fantastic way to do so, as you’re often out on the road with other lodgers. If you want to enjoy the solitude and reconnect with nature, you can always head to Patagonia or Nepal and spend some time hiking under the guidance of a trusted guide. If you want to get lost in the streets of a new city, Europe is always a great bet. The opportunities are endless – it’s about knowing what you want.

4) Consider cruises

Cruises are a great option for solo travellers, as they’re usually good places for meeting fellow travellers, with plenty of group activities. One of our solo clients recently embarked on a cruise on the Stella Australis around Argentina’s Cape Horn, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.

5) Find an amazing guide

Even when you want to be alone, there’s something reassuring about having a knowledgeable guide there to look out for you, especially if you’re trekking or in a country whose language you don’t speak. When we send people to incredible destinations, although our clients always love the country and the experiences, they inevitably end up dedicating most of their feedback to their guides. Experts in their destinations, our guides are real characters and excellent travelling companions. Aside from the day’s adventures, if you don’t want to dine alone, your guide, or perhaps your chef, will happily join you.

6) Use a tour operator

Not only can you have your logistics taken care of (one of the least enjoyable parts about planning a trip!) but you will have a trusted source for your hotel recommendations. Some hotels and lodges are better than others for solo travellers. This is one reason it’s great to book through someone who has been to the hotels and can vouch for them, particularly as some can be rather dull places if you’re travelling alone.
