Incredible, up-close wildlife encounters on the Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands, an isolated archipelago 600 miles off the Ecuadorian mainland, offer an experience unlike any other: a chance to see iconic wildlife closer than you ever imagined. Thanks to the lack of large predators, the wildlife here – giant tortoises, a myriad of birds, and inquisitive sea lions – have evolved without fear, allowing for intimate encounters on Galápagos safaris.

While the wildlife is obviously a huge draw, the landscapes are just as fascinating. From black, green and red sand beaches to volcanic craters and lava fields, the diversity is astonishing.

There’s also plenty of opportunity for adventure to be had. Go snorkelling with penguins off Bartolome Island, spot wildlife on a kayaking trip around Isabela Island and hiking in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. Or swim alongside playful sea lions, before watching the sun set over the volcanic landscape. It’s adventures like these that make a visit to the Galápagos Islands remarkable.

Whether you’re planning a Galápagos cruise honeymoon aboard an intimate catamaran, want to explore from the base of a luxury lodge or safari style camp, are looking to join an expertly staffed larger ship or embarking on an exclusive adventure on a fully private large charter, our Latin America experts will create the perfect luxury Galápagos vacation for you. A word from one of our experts

The Galápagos Islands are one of my favourite destinations in Latin America. Walking among giant tortoises in the highlands surrounded by mist and fog, snorkelling with sharks just meters from you in the deep waters, swimming with playful baby sea lions off sandy beaches and slowly picking out a path through the large groups of marine iguanas on nature walks. There’s nowhere else like it on earth!

Ask our experts

How do I get to the Galápagos?

Getting to the Galápagos is only possible by plane. You must first fly into mainland Ecuador, to either Quito or Guayaquil. From here, it’s a short domestic flight to the islands, taking no more than two and a half hours. Galápagos flights always depart in the morning, therefore you may need to fly to Ecuador at least one day before and spend the night there first.

How many days should I spend in the Galápagos?

We recommend spending at least seven days in the Galápagos, as this will give you time to explore multiple different islands and enjoy a range of excursions, such as snorkelling, kayaking and hiking, without feeling rushed. The number of days spent in the Galápagos is also influenced by whether you choose to do a cruise, which has a set duration, or stay in a lodge.

What types of tours are available in the Galápagos?

The types of tours available in the Galápagos are split between land-based lodge stays, or expedition cruises. Whichever option you choose, you will likely be able to enjoy a range of both land and water-based activities, including kayaking, snorkelling, wildlife watching and hiking. Expert guides and naturalists will be on hand to point out different wildlife and immerse you in the islands’ ecosystems.
