Ask our experts

What are the best African safari destinations for families?

The best African safari destinations for families are South Africa and Tanzania because they offer high concentrations of wildlife and many incredible, family-friendly accommodations. They also offer private vehicles on game drives, which give families flexibility to plan their days and see different wildlife. For families with teenagers aged 15 or over, we also recommend combining your safari with Rwanda for gorilla trekking.

What are the best safari lodges in Africa for families?

Some of the best safari lodges in Africa for families are Kwandwe Private Game Reserve and Tarkuni Private House, both of which are malaria free and offer exceptional privacy for families, with multi-bedroom villas and lodges. We also recommend Wilderness Vumbura Plains and Wilderness Mara for child-friendly activities and tailored kids’ programmes.

Are there any age restrictions for a family safari in Africa?

Yes, there are age restrictions for family safaris in Africa, although specific age limits can vary between countries and lodges. Usually, children must be at least six years old to go on a game drive, with private vehicles usually required for children under the age of 12. For gorilla trekking, the minimum age is 15, although family-friendly safari lodges often offer babysitting services for families with younger children.
