Though this is the main reason why many come to traditional Battambang, the small-town feel adds to its unique charm, while ancient temples strewn throughout the idyllic countryside offer an array of cultural excursions. One of the highlights is the ancient temple of Wat Ek Phnom. It was built in the 11th century during the reign of King Suryavarman I. Or climb the 358 stone steps to the top of Banan Temple to admire the stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
The town itself boasts a museum at which visitors can learn more about Khmer culture, and the Governor’s Residence allows guests to feel as though they’ve stepped back in time to the French colonial days.
