Encompassing the counties of Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey and Kent, the South of England is one of Britain’s most beautiful regions, home to sweeping landscapes, quaint villages and majestic country houses.
The South is composed of many varied landscapes from the open heathland of Ashdown Forest to the rolling chalk hills of the South Downs and ancient woodland of the New Forest. The historic landscapes of the High Weald hark back to the medieval period and have barely changed since the 14th century. The famous White Cliffs of Dover stand sentinel on the Kent coast while the Seven Sisters often stand in for them as a backdrop in films and period dramas.
Royal Berkshire is home to Windsor Castle, an official residence of Her Majesty the Queen. Aristocrats would come up to London for the season and retreat to their country seats for elegant house parties where the rich and famous would be entertained in luxury.
Kent is the gateway to continental Europe and the many picturesque towns of Sussex provide a welcome haven for commuters to London. Today, the burgeoning wine industry has added a new dimension to the South’s economy. The chalk hills provide a similar environment to the Champagne region of France but cooler summers and milder winters result in a different kind of grape and English sparkling wine is winning accolades across the industry.
