Approach by sea from Naples, and as you come to the landmark of the Faraglioni rocks, you’ll know you’ve reached the fabled hedonistic isle of Capri. This is the island that charmed both Roman Emperors Augustus and Tiberius, America’s Hollywood darlings and this century’s international jet set.

The rocky island’s legendary beauty arises from a combination of the Mediterranean’s best features: bright coloured waters, rugged cliffs hiding secluded coves, coloured secret grottos that glow with a life all of their own, and rocky plateaux, wooden platforms, and small pebbly beaches from which to launch yourself into the sea. The island’s main towns of Capri and historic Ana Capri are where you’ll find elegant piazzas bordered by gourmet restaurants, trendy cafes, big designer brands, and boutique artisan shops selling Capri-inspired products such as bright ceramic tiles, tailor-made suites, cashmere sweaters, and the epitomic Capri sandal. Further out, you can explore grand, bougainvillea-clad villas and rambling Roman ruins.

Not surprisingly, both centres have been taken over by mass tourism and the island is a hugely popular day-trip destination. The main touristic port, Marina Grande, is best described as hectic if you don’t know where you’re going. Although undeniably beautiful by day, it’s in the evening once the tourists catch the last hydrofoil home, that the island really comes into its own. Stay on Capri for at least one night to experience the magic of its twinkling nights or better yet, base yourself here for excursions to Amalfi coast and Positano.

Explore secret bays only reachable by boat and hiking trails that lead to ancient homes such as Tiberius’s Villa Jovis, the 13th century Casa Rosa, and more modern grand properties such as the sprawling Villa Krupp and its gardens. Take a chairlift up to Mount Solaro for godly views of the island. And while you’re here, you may as well spend time at Capri’s chicest beach clubs, where the VIPs go to see and be seen.
