An alpine paradise in the west of Slovenia, the Soca Valley contains important history and its namesake river which boasts brilliant emerald blue waters. Clear mountain air whips off the steep rock faces and tall cliffs that surrounded lush green valleys and forested gorges.
It is a truly sublime landscape as waterfalls cascade down white limestone mountains into turquoise pools flanked by verdant forest. Hiking routes wind their ways through the region as do rivers and streams, cutting through prime adventure territory. Indeed, there are many activities to sink your teeth into in this natural wonderland. Zip lines criss-cross between tall green trees, offering incredible views of the surrounding countryside, while white water rafting down the crystal-clear Soca River is truly indescribable.
If you are a keen cyclist, there are many mountain bike trails that climb the various hills and skirt the riverbank. For those wishing to test their physical mettle, there are numerous boulder formations upon which to climb. Yet there is something calming about setting off over bridges, looking onto a white shore while friends participate in fly-fishing or your happy family settles down for a delicious outdoor picnic in this most pristine wilderness. For those into history, these now idyllic mountains were once the setting for some of the hardest fought battles of the First World War, immortalised in Hemingway’s ‘A Farewell to Arms’.
