Itinerary in detail

Every trip is shaped around you. Below is a sample route to start from; we change any part of it to suit you.

Days 1-3

Coastal calm on the Costa Navarino

Your journey starts in the coastal resort of Costa Navarino, on the Peloponnese Peninsula’s Messinian Coast. In Greek mythology, it was the home of wise King Nestor of Pylos, and its ancient energy is palpable. Today, it’s a luxurious base from which to explore the area’s coastal towns. It’s flanked by gnarled olive trees and the shimmering Mediterranean, and there are a number of both land and sea activities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Navarino by paddle: cliffs, fortresses and crystal waters

One of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful natural harbours, and well sheltered from the Ionian sea, Navarino Bay forms a stunning backdrop for sea kayaking in its calm waters. Starting with a safety induction at Divari Beach, your experienced guide will lead you past towering cliffs decorated with migratory birds and medieval fortresses, stopping for a short hike on Sphacteria Island for views over the bay. Enjoy a refreshing swim and a homemade picnic before a gentle paddle back across the bay completes your excursion.

Days 4-5

Two nights in Kardamyli

Your second stop takes you to Kardamyli, now a scenic fishing village on the Mani Peninsula of the southern Peloponnese that was once the main port of the ancient Greek city of Sparta. Its population is small, and the atmosphere is suitably laidback – music echoes from seafront tavernas, and sunlight scatters the pebbled beach and cobblestone alleyways. First mentioned in Homer’s epic, The Ilyiad, around 1200BC, it remains linked to arts and culture by hosting annual jazz and literary festivals. It’s also the trailhead for many scenic mountain paths, and has the striking Viros Gorge nearby.

Stone trails and timeless views: discovering Messinian Mani

Explore the history of Mani, a rugged section of the southern Peloponnese peninsula, on this scenic hike through ancient trails. Starting from the coastline, you’ll gradually ascend into the rugged slopes of the Taygetos Mountains, trekking to the village of Exochori, whose earliest reference dates back to the 13th century. Its highland fortress was once the strategic heart of Kardamyli, and its powerful history still echoes through the ages. Timeworn hamlets and silvered olive groves accentuate the weathered character of the land, opening up into dramatic views over Viros Gorge.

Days 6-7

Medieval history in Monemvasia

A well-preserved Medieval castle town on the southeastern Peloponnese, Monemvasia was once only reachable by boat. A paved pathway was later constructed to connect the castle to the mainland, where the modern town was built. The castle itself was carved into the rock, designed to be invisible from the mainland in order to avoid attack, and today serves as a testament to the empires it has seen rise and fall. Explore the town, or venture further to the surrounding hills and beaches where you guide can give you a true feel for the area’s history.

Your knowledgeable local guide will take you on a tour of the old town, navigating the upper and lower quarters filled with stone alleys, arched passageways and Byzantine chapels. Complement the exploration by sampling regional flavours such as gydotyri (local goats cheese) in a sea-view taverna as you reflect on the history and stories you’ve heard.

Days 8-9

Find utopia in Arcadia

With a name that signifies pastoral paradise and harmony with nature, you can be sure of feeling restored and revitalised during your time in Arcadia. Its mountainous landscapes are scattered with forests and verdant plains, which led to its depiction in ancient literature as a bucolic utopia. A series of carefully chosen excursions will allow you to appreciate Arcadia’s natural beauty as you hike, raft and taste your way through dramatic cliffs, rugged gorges and ancient monasteries.
