Bhutan's historic seat of power
Trongsa is located in the centre of the country, an historic and strategically important town that is known as the gateway to the east of the country. The town’s dzong fortress is particularly impressive, viewable from virtually anywhere in the valley, described as a dragon flying over mountain peaks.
Constructed in 1644, it served as the original seat of power of the House of Wangchuck before they became the ruling dynasty of Bhutan in 1907. Today, all kings of Bhutan are first given the title of penlop (or governor) of Trongsa, and the first and second kings of Bhutan ruled from the town.
