Marari – short for Mararikulum – is a serene palm-fringed beach village in the Alleppey district of Kerela, easily reached from Cochin and close to Vembanad Lake and the Keralan backwaters.
This is the place for those after relaxed beach vibes away from the bustle of the region’s busier resort towns. The village has retained an ‘undiscovered’ charm with an easy going way of life that has changed little in the last dozen decades, and where traditional fishing is still the main source of income.
The beach itself is a pretty, wide stretch of sand, facing west and offering spectacular sunsets. The Arabian Sea waters are warm, a favourite for hunting pods of dolphins, wave-seeking surfers and snorkellers alike.
While swaying in a hammock between the pines watching fisherman land their daily haul is perhaps the finest way to spend time here, the region is also renowned for its unique forms of Ayurvedic massage and medicine. Charming villages can be discovered on foot or by bike and there are some fascinating historic sites nearby. With the backwaters close, cruises on traditional houseboats are an unforgettable way to spend a day.
