A peaceful lake and seafront close to Galle
A short way east along the coast from Galle Fort, Koggala is a small town fronted by one of the longest beaches in Sri Lanka and backed by a large lake.
This peaceful lagoon is dotted with islands and fringed with mangroves and forest, a peaceful place alive with birds and particularly beautiful at sun set.
The stretch of Indian Ocean either side of town is one of the places you can watch the famous stilt fishermen cast their lines beyond the breaks, waves which also provide some excellent surfing. As well as Galle Fort being within easy reach, you can also go whale watching from Mirissa.
