Mandrare River Camp

On the wooded banks of the seasonal river from which it takes its name, Mandrare is a small safari camp a three-hour drive from the nearest airport at Fort Dauphin (it can also be reached by light aircraft), a remote location that really immerses you in the Androy’s unique culture and wildlife.

The camp itself is made up of just seven tents under the shade of tamarind trees looking out over the wide sandy river to the mountains beyond. Though somewhat basic due to the need to be taken down each monsoon season, they are spacious with plumbed en suite bathrooms and are solar powered.

A communal tent, down by the plunge pool, covers a lounge, bar and dining area. Three course evening meals are often enjoyed out in in special locations under the stars.

Close to both protected spiny forest and sacred gallery forest, you can see to Verreaux’s sifaka and ring-tailed lemur on guided walks, learn about the Antandroy’s with visits to the neighbouring village and marvel at the area’s very own avenue of baobabs as the sun sets.
