Manafiafy Beach & Rainforest Lodge

Strung around a sheltered bay where mangroves meet the Indian Ocean, Manafiafy Beach & Rainforest Lodge is a unique and remote property in southeast Madagascar.

Five large thatched bungalows are spaced out in the forest, hand-made by local craftsmen out of wood, with huge double beds, a lounge area and en suite shower room accompanied by the sound of waves. Windows open out onto an expansive decked area leading down to the beach. The rooms also feature a single bed and the family bungalow has two bedrooms. Water is solar heated and the rooms’ electrics are similarly powered.

In the corner of the bay, find the communal lounge, bar and dining area where three course meals are served, often fresh caught by fishermen in the neighbouring village who you can see rowing out on their canoes.

Activities here include snorkelling off islands in the bay, kayaking, mangrove tours, village visits, and forest walks on the lookout for lemurs, chameleons and bats. You can also head out to spot humpback whales between mid-June and December, or relax with a massage. It’s also possible to camp on a nearby island.
