Shanghai, colloquially abbreviated to Hù, is an international metropolis found on China’s central coast – specifically on the estuary of the Yangtze River – and is the biggest city in the country. It is a vibrant, colourful city and a global financial hub, where in its heart, you’ll find The Bund, the world-famous waterside walkway.
As expected of such a large buzzing city, it is truly filled to the brim with sights not to be missed. One such sight is the instantly recognisable iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower, which gets its name from the futuristic pearl-shaped structure of the building.
Another not to be missed is the famous Buddhist temple, the Jade Buddha Temple found over in the western part of Shanghai, in which you will find two jade Buddha statues dating back to 1882 and the Qing Dynasty.
Those wishing to take a reminder of their time in this dazzling city home with them, will delight in the bustling, century-old Nanjing Road, which although is now dominated by the larger department stores, still offers nearly 100 traditional stores providing a wonderful array of authentic embroidery, silk, jade, and traditional clocks.
Over in the Zhujiajiao Water Village, found in the suburbs of Shanghai city, you’ll discover a heritage of over 1,700 years with old bridges dating back from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Known as the Venice of Shanghai, it combines the best of beauty and history, pleasing every kind of visitor. Those keen to explore both can also head over to the city’s Yu Garden, a lovely classical garden considered among the top attractions in Shanghai for its roots in the Ming Dynasty from the 14th – 15th centuries.
