Itinerary in detail
Every trip is shaped around you. Below is a sample route to start from; we change any part of it to suit you.
Days 1-4
Autumn days in the City of Ten Thousand Shrines
We begin our autumn leaves tour with four days in Kyoto, Japan’s imperial pearl, where we hope to see the spectacular sight of the city’s ancient palaces, traditional townhouses and ornate shrines augmented by vibrant autumn leaves. See kimono-clad geisha on their way to engagements; stroll in the celebrated Ryoan-ji rock garden; and visit the magnificent wooden Kiyomizu-dera and the Golden and Silver Pavilion Temples.
There’s also time for a visit to the usually verdant Arashiyama, which we anticipate will be coloured in autumnal reds and yellows. Your travel designer can help you to experience the city at its best with private guided tours and excursions.

Where you could stay
A journey through timeless temples

Step back in time on a visit to Kinkaku-ji, the stunning Golden Pavilion, originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. From here, you’ll journey to the tranquil Ryoan-ji Temple, home to one of Japan’s most famous Zen rock gardens. As you stand before the simple yet profound arrangement of raked sand and 15 stones, take a moment to reflect on the mystery and beauty of this minimalist masterpiece.
The wonders of Arashiyama

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Arashiyama, a lush district known for its peaceful ambiance and stunning autumn scenery. Your tour begins at the tranquil Otagi-Nenbutsuji Temple, where you’ll encounter 1,200 whimsical and expressive Rakan statues, each carved by a different worshiper.
Next, we’ll head to Okochi Sanso, a serene mountain retreat with breathtaking gardens that are especially vibrant in the autumn months. After soaking in the views, enjoy a peaceful walk through the enchanting bamboo groves before arriving at Tenryu-ji Temple, one of Kyoto’s most renowned Zen Buddhist temples, where history and nature intertwine beautifully.
Day 5
Stay in the “dwelling place of the Gods”
Mount Koya, or Koyasan, is a sacred mountain in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture, known as the centre of Shingon Buddhism, founded by the monk Kukai (Kōbō Daishi) in the 9th century. It stands at about 900 meters (2,950 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by lush forests and stunning landscapes. The mountain is home to over 100 temples, with the most famous being Kongōbu-ji, the head temple of the Shingon sect. Koyasan also features the picturesque Okunoin Cemetery, where Kukai is believed to be entombed, making it a revered pilgrimage site. Here, you can experience traditional temple lodging (shukubo), participate in meditation and enjoy the serene atmosphere that embodies Japan’s spiritual heritage.

Where you could stay
The best of Mount Koya

Start with a visit to Kongo Buji, the holiest temple and headquarters of the Shingon sect. This remarkable complex, established in 1593, features administrative buildings, a prestigious religious university and a temple open for visitors.
Next, we will explore Garan, where you’ll encounter some of the most significant structures in Koyasan. The tour culminates in a unique and ancient ceremony called ‘Jukai,’ where a Buddhist monk will guide you through the profound experience of taking refuge in the teachings of Buddha.
Following this spiritual ceremony, you will check in at the Eko-in Temple. Your guide will provide assistance and share insights about your stay at this serene Buddhist monastery.
Day 6
Overnight in Osaka
Your journey concludes in Osaka, Japan’s third-largest city, a lively metropolis known for its cutting-edge architecture, lively nightlife and mouthwatering street food. Immerse yourself in the city’s autumn splendor on a fully personalized luxury tour, crafted to match your interests. Whether you’re exploring modern landmarks or savouring Osaka’s famous culinary scene, your bespoke experience promises to reveal the dynamic charm of this captivating city.

Where you could stay
A private tailored tour of Osaka

Experience the beauty of Osaka in autumn on a bespoke, luxury tour tailored to your preferences. Discover Osaka Castle, a renowned symbol of Japan’s history and culture, meticulously reconstructed to reflect its original 16th-century grandeur. Located within a serene park adorned with plum, peach and cherry trees, the castle offers a striking contrast against the modern skyline, creating a picturesque blend of tradition and contemporary charm. Enjoy a seamless and personalised journey through Osaka’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes, curated exclusively for you.
