Perched on the banks of the Perfume River in Central Vietnam, Hue preserves another one of the country’s safeguarded heritage sites under UNESCO. This area belongs to the Complex of Hue Monuments and includes the Imperial City, erected under the Nguyen Dynasty. Here the old citadel, royal tombs, working temples and exquisite pagodas rise right alongside a contrasting presence of sleek hotels and modern houses.

When in Hue, I love to take in the majesty of the Imperial City. This was the political seat of Vietnam’s last dynasty, from where the Nguyen emperors once reigned. Prepare to be captivated by the architecture. Look closely and you’ll notice a blend of Vietnamese, French and Chinese styles, adorned with intricate motifs like dragons and phoenixes.
