Bolivia's most surreal and stunning experience

Stretching over 10,000 square kilometres across southwestern Bolivia, the world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni is truly a sight to behold. Formed from the drying-up of vast prehistoric lakes, the landscape stretches flat and empty as far as the eye can see, leaving you feeling as if on another planet.

During the dry season, which runs from April to October, the uniform geometric patterns across the crisp, dry salt surface glitter under sunlight. During the rainy season, from November to March, flooding transforms the flats into a spellbinding mirror which reflects the sky and seems to defy reality. Whatever the season, unleash your creative side with experimental photographs of the optical illusions created by this hypnotic horizon.

Although at first glance they may seem empty of life, your Jacada guide will unlock the secrets of these otherworldly landscapes on your Uyuni private tour. Clamber into your comfortable 4×4 and soak up the freedom of journeying through the vast, open space. Your guide will point out the features of the region, from the giant cacti on Inchuasi Island to tiny vizcachas, culpeos (Andean foxes) and vicuñas roaming the plains.

We recommend combining the Salar de Uyuni with the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, in the Bolivian Altiplano, and Chile’s Atacama desert, as part of our Travesia journey. Lunar landscapes, powerful geysers, hot springs and vividly coloured lakes filled with flamingoes provide startlingly beautiful contrast to Uyuni’s stark, white expanse. Allow your curiosity to be ignited by the endlessly fascinating flora, fauna and geology of this journey, while your expert guide imparts their deep understanding of each feature. When to visit the Uyuni Salt Flats

The best time to visit Salar de Uyuni is arguably during the wet season from November to March, as this is when you’ll be able to experience the mirror effect created by a thin layer of rain water on the surface of the salt flats. However, it is possible to explore year round, and visiting during the dry season (April to October), will allow you to see the intriguing geometric pattern on the crust’s surface. You’ll also be able to explore more of the region, as flooding in the wet season can restrict access to certain areas. While daytime temperatures are often mild, be prepared for very cold nights. It’s not unusual for overnight temperatures to reach -20°C (-4°F) in winter (June and July).
