Peru’s Urubamba, or Sacred Valley, is the country’s cultural heart. Here you will experience traditional Andean life and explore archaeological wonders left behind by the Incas. The Lares region, which sits just to the north of this, is the more remote and lesser-visited area of the valley. You can enjoy a quieter, more in-depth and active experience of this popular region that is equally as scenic – and chances are you will get it all to yourself.

Embark on either a four to seven-day experiences, staying at a collection of comfortable mountain lodges along the way and mixing daily hikes with vehicle transportation. Explore its traditional highland villages as well as physical wonders such as glacial lakes, waterfalls, snowy peaks and rugged Andean landscapes. All tours are led by expert guides and both itineraries include many of the Sacred Valley’s best Incan sites, as well as Machu Picchu.

Please note that the trek involves hiking over several high passes up to 4,200m and involves steep descents on old Inca steps – it is recommended that all clients have some previous trekking experience and should be in reasonable fitness.

The Lares is ideal for those looking for an active adventure whilst really getting to know this unique region. Plus it’s a good option for families with teenagers or older children, or simply for those looking for an alternative to the Inca Trail.
