Jungfraujoch is a glacial pass found between the Jungfrau and Mönch mountains in the Bernese Alps. The heights themselves are visible from far away, displaying their awesome power with snowy peaks reaching high into the skies above.

It is best known for having the highest railway station in Europe, located at a dizzying 11,332ft. Enjoy panoramic views of the snowy Alps, green valleys, and the Great Aletsch Glacier. Here too can be found the Top of Europe building, containing several restaurants, exhibitions and an elevator to the Sphinx Observatory.

Indeed, the heavenly seat of the Sphinx Observatory is one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories. Tunnels lead out to secured hiking trails that wind across the surrounding slopes, passing safely along the crevasses in the glacier.

Close by is the city of Interlaken, a great place from which to base yourself for forays into the Swiss Alps. Interlaken boasts picturesque panoramas of the surrounding countryside and is flanked by the beautiful Thunersee and Brienzersee lakes.

When to visit

Jungfraujoch is great year-round, the views particularly great during the sunnier summer and autumn months. Interlaken is best during the summer when the Thunersee and Brienzersee lakes are at their prettiest. Switzerland is a year-round destination. In winter it is a mecca for skiiers, and there are plenty of winter hikes and snowshowing activities on offer. In spring and summer the meadows fill with wild flowers and the lakes look exceptionally beautiful.
