Slovenia's vibrant capital

Slovenia’s largest city and capital since independence in 1991, Ljubljana is the country’s cultural, educational, economic and political hub.

Emblematic for Slovenia as a whole, it is an extremely pretty and easily navigable place with many wonderful attractions either in the historic centre or within easy reach by road.

The Ljubljanica River snakes through the city centre, and atop a luscious green hill sits the prominent Ljubljana Castle. The new city and commercial core are situated in the west, whilst below the castle ramparts lie the winding streets of the old town. Cafe-lined river banks are at the heart of social life here, and across one of many pretty bridges, such as the famous Tromostovje, there are museums, grand baroque buildings and the vast grounds of Tivoli Park.

Ljubljana is perfect for long, leisurely wanderings, allowing you to soak up the city’s rich history and vibrant cosmopolitan vibe. People-watch with a glass of crisp, local wine by the river, duck into an offbeat gallery, taste seasonal delicacies at the central market, visit the opera or head to Metelkova City, a converted military barracks and now creative centre of Slovene counter-culture.

Ljubljana is such an underrated capital city, but that is what gives it its charm.
