A walk through history

From the green rolling pastures of the Yorkshire Dales, to the heather covered expanse of the North York Moors, it’s really not hard to see why Yorkshire is renowned as ‘God’s Own County’.

The largest of England’s counties, its endless spots of natural beauty coupled with its charming cities and towns, really sets it apart from the rest of the country.

Once the English capital, it is understandably filled with sites imperative to English history, such as York Minister and the majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fountains Abbey, found in the Dales. In this county, you will be sure to gain near unparalleled insight into Roman, Medieval, Tudor and Viking England.

For those looking for further insight into the past, there are an abundance of glamourous stately homes dotted around the landscape, from the 300-year-old Castle Howard, north of York, to the seventeenth century mansion, Harewood House.

After your adventures in its bountiful landscapes, there’s no better place than the quaint and cobbled ancient-roman streets of York, or the affluent spa resort of Harrogate, which offer plenty of local cafes in which to enjoy a high tea experience, or a simple brew of the treasured Yorkshire tea.

Cultural sites are also plenty, with the home of classic English novelists, the Bronte sisters, in the village of Haworth over in west Yorkshire, as well as the seaside town of Whitby in the north east, known as the setting of Mary Shelley’s Gothic classic, Dracula.

Venturing out of Whitby, marine and wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted to step into the natural surrounds of the North York Moors National Park. Here along the coast is the perfect location to appreciate the various species of fish, sea birds, whales, dolphins and sharks as well as the adorable common and grey seals and pups, which can be seen on the shores near the small fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay.

A word from one of our experts

Yorkshire is full of natural beauty and ancient history. One of my favourite highlights is visiting York Minister and climbing up its 275 steps to the top of the tower. The views across York here are incredible!

When to visit

England is a year-round destination, but the spring months between March to May and autumn months of September to November are particularly pleasant. The gardens and countryside are bursting with flowers and in the autumn the trees start to turn warm shades of red and orange. Rain can make an appearance at any time of year, but showers are usually fairly light and don’t last long. Although winter can be cold, many cities have exhibitions and events around Christmas that are worth experiencing.
