Family trips in Iceland

Luxury Iceland Family Tours made for you

Inspired private family trips to Iceland

Adventure into dramatic landscapes on a luxury Iceland family vacation

Experience otherworldly landscapes on your luxury Iceland family vacation. Marvel at volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields, as well as some of the largest glaciers in Europe.

The ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ is crammed with incredible natural wonders. There are beautiful places to stay and fun, educational experiences centred around strong Icelandic culture and tradition. Your family trip to Iceland can also include a multitude of handpicked outdoor activities, chosen to suit your family perfectly.

We often recommend a selection of our favourite experiences, adjusted to the time of year you’re travelling. For instance, you can visit active volcanoes in the Icelandic Highlands and spot sweet puffins in the Eastern Fjords. Or trek across glaciers and witness the awesome power of geysers in the Golden Circle.

You can also discover traditional turf houses in Northern Iceland, watch crashing waterfalls in the south, and learn about history and culture in the capital city of Reykjavik. Here, we suggest joining interactive and expertly guided visits to the National Museum and Saga Museum, where artefacts trace back to Iceland’s Viking roots.

Experienced in planning family trips to Iceland, and with first-hand knowledge, Jacada’s travel designers will help you plan a personalised itinerary. Speak with our experts, who will curate a trip of interest-led experiences with exceptional guides, based on your family’s interests.

When to visit

Iceland is a fantastic place to visit year-round. The winter months’ long nights are the best time to witness the Northern Lights, whereas long summer days are great for hiking. Snowmelt in the spring makes Iceland’s waterfalls even more spectacular, while autumn is quieter and the first snow’s contrast with the reddening mosses is particularly photogenic.

Ask our experts

Is Iceland a good destination for families with toddlers and young children?

Iceland is better suited to families with older children or teenagers rather than toddlers and young children due to potential harsh weather and landscapes, and age restrictions on certain activities. That said, Jacada’s expert travel designers can adapt the trip to suit your and your family, including gentler activities to suit younger children if necessary.

Are there age restrictions for visiting geothermal spas in Iceland?

Yes, there are age restrictions for visiting geothermal spas in Iceland, although these vary significantly between locations. For example, the Blue Lagoon allows children aged two and over, but children must be supervised and those under eight years old must wear free provided floaty armbands. Your travel designer will be able to advise you on the best geothermal spas for your family group and trip.

Is Iceland a good destination for multi-generational family trips?

Yes, Iceland is a great destination for multi-generational family trips because there are plenty of outdoor activities with wide appeal to different ages. Jacada’s expert travel designers will tailor your trip to suit you, but a typical multi-generational family trip to Iceland might include boat trips to spot humpback whales and puffins, a Northern Lights hunting tour and exploring glacial valleys on Icelandic horses, hikes or snowmobiles.

Is Iceland suitable for people with limited mobility?

Yes, Iceland can be suitable for people with limited mobility as long as certain accommodations are made. You should bear in mind that it may impact what you are able to do on the trip, although we will strive to give you the fullest experience possible. For example, your travel designer may incorporate more boat tours and Viking history rather than hikes to glaciers and waterfalls.

How far in advance should I book a family trip to Iceland with Jacada?

Ideally, you should aim to book a family trip to Iceland with Jacada around 6 months in advance in order to ensure the best availability for accommodation and tours. Bear in mind that busier periods, such as Christmas, will book up further in advance. However, Jacada’s expert travel designers can also adapt to work within shorter time frames where necessary.

What should I pack for visiting Iceland in the winter?

You should pack plenty of layers and warm, waterproof clothing for visiting Iceland in the winter (December to February). While visiting Iceland during winter is a magical experience, these are the coldest months of the year and temperatures generally fall between -1°C– -5°C (23°F–30°F). We recommend thermal base layers, sturdy waterproof walking boots and insulated gloves paired with a thick, warm coat.
