The forces of nature at their most impressive
Three main attractions form the dazzling Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. Covering about 300 km in the South of Iceland, this dazzling route loops from Reykjavik into central Iceland and back and is an integral element of any Iceland tour.
Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of only two places in the world where you can witness the awesome power of the shifting North-American and European tectonic plates. Gullfoss – the “golden falls”, is one of Europe’s most impressive waterfalls and is located on the edge of Iceland’s wild interior. Haukadalur valley contains two geysers, the inactive Geysir and the active Strokkur, which sends a column of boiling water into the air every 15 minutes or so.
