Brimming with natural beauty and captivating history, Austria is a country well worth discovering. Beyond the Baroque architecture and palaces in Vienna and Salzburg, there are incredible lakes to see in the region of Salzkammergut. From Vienna, take a day trip into the picturesque valley of Wachau along the Danube, seeing medieval castles and tasting excellent wines along the way.
Tucked between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, Slovenia encompasses the mountains of the eastern Alps and a sliver of the Mediterranean. The country boasts a landscape more varied than any other of its size in Europe. Its culture takes the best from each of its larger neighbours, creating something truly unique. Spend a day exploring the hiking trails and hidden waterfalls of the beautiful Soča Valley, or admiring the green waters of Lake Bled.

Picturesque cities such as Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Basel and Lugano are well worth the visit. Enjoy a scenic boat tour on Lake Geneva and explore the 9th century Chillon Castle set on a rocky islet, meet with a local expert at a cheese grotto 25m underground in Gstaad or become an honorary shepherd for the day in Andermatt, exploring the alpine meadows with a goat by your side.

When to visit
Central Europe has a diverse climate, so the best time to visit depends on your interests. The most popular time for general sightseeing and pleasant weather is during the shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October. During this time, temperatures are mild, crowds are thinner and the cities and countryside are beautiful with spring blossoms or autumn foliage. The peak tourist season is June to August, which offers warm and sunny weather perfect for outdoor activities, festivals and exploring, but also comes with larger crowds.
