Giant glaciers and the magnificent Patagonian steppe
The glacier region is without doubt one of the country’s most beautiful areas and the highlight of many people’s trip to Argentina. Los Glaciares National Park is located in an area known as the austral Andes near the border with Chile, and is home to stunning mountains, lakes and, of course, glaciers.
The Perito Moreno is the most well-known glacier in the park and one of the few in the world that is still advancing – it can move up to 2m a day. 30km long, 5km wide and up to 60m high in parts, the Perito Moreno really is a sight to behold. Its craggy peaks, in multiple shades of white and blue, tower over the turquoise waters of the glacial lake.
The sight, and sound, of watching monumental chunks of glacial ice split and crash into the water is a spectacular phenomenon and there are walkways that allow you to view the glacier from different angles. There is also the option to take a boat trip around the base.
